Frequently Asked Questions

It means the cabinetry is built individually for your room in a workshop, not picked from a catalogue of fixed module sizes and then trimmed to fit. Every carcass, door and drawer is made to your measurements. That is the practical difference between a handmade kitchen and a fitted kitchen range: one is made for your walls, the other is made for a warehouse and adjusted on site.

In practice the terms are used interchangeably, but there is a useful distinction. Made to measure means the sizes are built to your room. Fully bespoke means the design itself is originated for you: the layout, the details, the mouldings, the proportions. We do both, and which one you need depends on whether your room simply has unusual dimensions or whether you want something designed from scratch.

Originals is our entry-level handmade range: still made to measure and hand-painted, but working within a defined set of door styles and details. Exclusive is fully bespoke, custom-built to order at our UK manufacturing facility, where the design is originated for your home rather than adapted to it. Both are on display in the studio so you can see where the money goes before you choose.

Yes. We offer over 50 paints and stains as standard, and if none of those is quite right you can have any colour from the Farrow & Ball or Little Greene ranges at no additional cost. That last part matters, because most companies treat a bespoke colour match as a chargeable extra.

In-frame means the door sits inside a solid timber frame rather than overlaying the front of the cabinet. It costs more because it takes more material and far more precision: the gap around every door has to be consistent or it shows immediately. What you get for that is a more traditional look and a door that is supported on all four sides. Whether it is worth it depends on the style you are after, and it is easier to judge standing in front of one than reading about it.

Yes, and this is the main reason people choose handmade over a fitted range. Because nothing is a fixed size, we design around the problem rather than hiding it behind filler panels. An awkward alcove becomes a pantry or a dresser. A troublesome doorway stops dictating the layout. In older Leighton Buzzard and Linslade properties this usually recovers a surprising amount of usable space.

Yes. Shaker is the most requested style but it is not the only one we make. Traditional and classic designs with panelled doors, deeper mouldings and period detailing are all possible, and because each kitchen is built individually we can match mouldings to skirting, architrave or panelling that already exists in the house. That matters in a period property, where a kitchen that ignores the rest of the house always looks like an add-on.

The frames and doors are timber, which is what allows them to be hand-painted, repainted later and repaired rather than replaced. Painted finishes are applied to order rather than pre-finished in bulk, which is why the colour choice is so wide. We will talk through the specific construction on the range you choose, because it differs between Originals and Exclusive.

Yes, and that is one of the quiet advantages of timber cabinetry. A painted handmade kitchen can be rubbed down and repainted in a new colour years later, and handles can be swapped, so the kitchen can be brought up to date without ripping anything out. A foil-wrapped or laminate door cannot be treated that way. It changes the maths on the initial cost, because you are buying something that can be refreshed rather than replaced.

Less so, because the styling is not tied to a particular year's finish. Handleless gloss, specific worktop patterns and fashionable colours all age visibly. Panelled timber cabinetry in a considered colour tends not to, and if the colour does start to feel wrong it can be repainted rather than replaced. The parts most likely to date are the worktop and the handles, and both of those are the cheapest things to change.
