Frequently Asked Questions

Through us. Tamaru is an authorised Spiral Cellars supplier and installer, working from our studio on Watling Street, Hockliffe, near Leighton Buzzard, and installing across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. We specify the cellar, coordinate the excavation and manage the installation as one project, rather than handing you a kit and leaving you to find a builder.

It is a circular wine cellar sunk into the floor beneath your kitchen, dining room or hallway, with a spiral staircase down the middle and bottles stored in the walls around you. It is crafted from engineered limestone concrete and can be installed almost anywhere without needing an existing basement or cellar, and it is naturally climate controlled. The temperature stability comes from the surrounding earth rather than from machinery, which is the same principle a traditional château cellar works on.

No, and that is the point of it. It relies on the natural temperature of the ground rather than mechanical refrigeration, so there is no compressor to run, no unit to service and no running cost. Worth knowing honestly: because there is no mechanical cooling, the cellar depends entirely on natural ground temperature. For long-term storage of a collection that is exactly what you want. If you need a precise, adjustable temperature for a specific reason, we would talk you through a wine room instead.

Usually not. Planning permission is not normally required unless your home is a Listed Building or you are within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. In Scotland a Building Warrant is needed. If your property is listed, a Listed Buildings application goes to the Local Authority and typically takes 8 to 10 weeks from submission to approval. For most homes around Leighton Buzzard and the surrounding villages this simply does not apply, but we check it before anything else.

Building regulations approval is only required when the cellar goes into a habitable space such as inside the home, not into a detached garage or outbuilding. A Party Wall Award becomes relevant if the excavation is planned within 3 metres of a neighbouring building or structure, and your neighbour has the right to request a formal award completed by a Party Wall Surveyor. If you are already going through a Party Wall process for other building work, the cellar can be added to it. We handle the paperwork rather than leaving it with you.

This is the question everybody asks and it is a reasonable one, because you are digging a hole below your floor. The engineers calculate a reinforced concrete base specification to counter water uplift, and a waterproof liner system keeps the cellar watertight. Ground conditions are assessed before anything is designed, so if your plot has a high water table it is identified at survey stage rather than discovered mid-excavation.

It depends on depth, model, door system and how much of the work is done for you. Bought as a kit and installed by an experienced independent build team, a Spiral Cellar generally falls in the region of £22,000 to £54,000. Across the full range, Spiral Cellars projects run from around £19,000 for a kit to £330,000 for a fully customised installation. Entry-level models storing around 650 bottles start at over £25,000, while larger models holding up to 1,900 bottles can exceed £55,000, and some entrance door systems alone can cost up to £25,000. We quote against your actual floor plan and ground conditions.

The signature in-floor Spiral Cellar can store up to 1,650 bottles at the largest depth, with smaller depths available for more modest collections. Because the bottles sit in the walls around the staircase, every bottle is visible and reachable without moving anything else, which is the practical difference between a cellar and a stack of wine racks in a cupboard.

Then a below-floor cellar is not the only option. Spiral Cellars also produce wine rooms and modular concrete components that create wine spaces both above and below ground, plus a design-only service and a fully managed end-to-end service for larger projects. A wine wall, for example, turns a redundant alcove or the end of a room into a display feature. We will tell you honestly at survey stage which of these your house actually suits.

We supply OTIF internal steel doors, which are fully customisable in size, configuration and finish, with slim steel profiles and decorative glazing that lets light travel between rooms while still separating them. They sit on this page because both products do the same job architecturally: they turn a functional part of the house into a deliberate feature. A steel door between a kitchen and a hallway, and a glass trap door revealing a cellar beneath the floor, are both about making the structure of the home visible rather than hiding it.
