Are premium kitchen appliances worth it? We look at Miele, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Liebherr Monolith and BORA, from performance to everyday use.

There can be a big difference in price between standard and premium kitchen appliances. A premium oven, refrigerator or hob can cost significantly more, which naturally raises the question: what are you actually getting for the extra investment?

With premium appliances, you are often paying for better engineering, materials and performance, as well as features designed to make cooking or food storage easier. But that doesn't mean every appliance needs to be premium.

Here, we look at Miele, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Liebherr Monolith and BORA, what each is particularly known for and where the additional investment may be worthwhile.

Premium kitchen appliances at a glance

Brand

Keeping food fresher for longer and generous refrigeration are priorities

Wolf

Ovens, range cookers and cooktops

You are a keen cook and want greater cooking control and generous oven capacity

Liebherr Monolith

Fresh food storage is important and you want refrigeration that can blend into the kitchen

BORA

Hobs with integrated extraction

You want quiet, effective extraction without an overhead extractor

What does paying more actually give you?

Depending on the brand and model, premium kitchen appliances can offer better materials, more precise controls, specialist cooking or food-storage features and quieter operation.

The difference may be something you notice every day: an oven that gives you greater control, refrigeration designed to keep fresh food in the right conditions, or quieter extraction in an open-plan room.

It is also worth comparing the appliance warranty, as length and cover can vary between brands and models.

Miele: quality designed for everyday use

Miele is well known for integrated appliances, including ovens, steam ovens, dishwashers, coffee machines and hobs. There is a wide choice across the range, making it easier to select built-in appliances that look good together and suit the way you cook.

Durability is also an important part of Miele's approach. Most of its household appliance series are tested for the equivalent of 20 years of average use. This is product testing rather than a guarantee that an individual appliance will last for 20 years.

Miele vs Siemens

We are often asked about Miele vs Siemens. Both offer good-quality appliances and useful technology. Miele generally sits at the premium end of the market, while Siemens offers a broader range of price points, with studioLine representing its more premium collection.

We would compare the individual appliances and the features you are likely to use rather than choosing by brand alone.

Sub-Zero: refrigeration with a focus on food preservation

If keeping fresh food at its best is a priority, Sub-Zero refrigeration is worth considering.

Separate cooling systems for the refrigerator and freezer help maintain the right conditions for the food stored inside, while air-purification technology helps reduce ethylene gas, odours and other contaminants.

Depending on the model, Sub-Zero can be finished in stainless steel or fitted with custom furniture panels for an integrated look. Selected models also offer filtered water dispensers and automatic ice makers.

The larger sizes available provide generous storage, so it is worth considering Sub-Zero early in the kitchen design to make sure the space and any required water connections are planned correctly.

Liebherr Monolith: flexible food storage

Liebherr Monolith is another premium refrigeration option, particularly when generous food storage is required. Refrigerators and freezers can be fitted with custom furniture panels for a fully integrated appearance or finished in stainless steel.

Food preservation is an important part of the range. BioFresh-Plus provides separate drawers where temperature and humidity can be adjusted to create suitable conditions for different fresh foods.

Depending on the model, features can also include PowerCooling, InfinitySpring filtered water and an automatic IceMaker, while the collection includes dedicated wine storage.

Monolith can therefore be a good choice when flexible fresh food storage is important and you want the refrigeration to sit neatly within the kitchen design.

Wolf: generous ovens and greater cooking control

Wolf specialises in cooking appliances, including ovens, range cookers and cooktops.

One noticeable difference is the size of its built-in ovens. Wolf offers ovens around 762 mm wide, compared with standard 600 mm wide ovens, giving keen cooks more generous oven capacity.

Wolf cooking also focuses on control and performance, with features varying by appliance. Its larger ovens need to be considered when planning the cabinetry, but for someone who cooks regularly and values both space and control, the additional investment may be worthwhile.

BORA: extraction built into the hob

BORA combines the hob and extractor, removing cooking vapours close to where they are produced.

BORA extraction is generally quieter than a conventional extractor hood and can be particularly useful on an island, where removing the overhead extractor leaves a clear view across the room.

Systems can use recirculation or extraction to the outside. As the extraction sits below the hob, BORA is best considered early in the kitchen design. A conventional extractor can still be a good option depending on the room, installation and budget, so it is worth considering which works best for the overall kitchen design.

Choosing the right appliances for your kitchen

Are luxury kitchen appliances worth it?

It depends on which appliances matter most to you.

A keen cook may choose to invest more in ovens and a hob, while a family that buys plenty of fresh food may get more benefit from premium refrigeration. In an open-plan kitchen, quieter appliances and discreet extraction may be higher priorities.

You don't have to choose premium models throughout. Investing more in the appliances you use and value most, while choosing simpler options elsewhere, can make much more sense.

For clients considering luxury kitchen appliances in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas, we can help compare these options alongside the kitchen design itself.

Why choose your appliances early?

Some appliances have a direct impact on the kitchen design. Larger refrigeration needs more space, a BORA hob needs room for the extraction below, and a wider Wolf oven will affect the surrounding cabinetry. Refrigeration with filtered water or an ice maker may also require a water connection.

Choosing these appliances early means the cabinetry, electrics, plumbing and ventilation can be planned correctly from the start.

Where is it worth spending more?

The best place to invest is usually where you will notice the difference most. That might be a larger oven for a keen cook, refrigeration that gives a family better fresh food storage, or discreet extraction in an open-plan kitchen.

At Tamaru, we consider the appliances alongside the cabinetry, storage and layout so that everything works together.
